Signify will add a new string to its bow of Hue products for the connected home. It is a video doorbell, the first of its kind for the manufacturer, which also offers several surveillance cameras that run on batteries or connect to the mains.

Hue rings the doorbell

The doorbell in question has not been made official, but that hasn't stopped it from appearing in the iOS app for the Hue ecosystem, which was recently updated... and which already allows to connect this accessory (which doesn't exist, therefore). The doorbell requires a Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connection, but beyond that, the technical specifications are not known. However, it is likely that Like the Hue Secure Camera range, the sensor can record in 1080p and the doorbell integrates a smart alert function with end-to-end encryption.

Despite Due to its accidental appearance in the iOS app, it is likely that the doorbell is not compatible with HomeKit, Apple's home automation platform, nor with Matter, which is the common home automation protocol that the entire industry is trying to impose. A protocol that still does not support cameras and therefore, video doorbells.

For the HomeKit ecosystem, Apple has also developed a secure video technology, which stores (securely) video recordings — but only for paid iCloud+ subscribers. Hue cameras are also not compatible with this system. There's no release date for the upcoming doorbell, but it's likely to be available this fall.
