Since the creation of the first opus of the Fallout saga in 1997, never a single major opus has seen the light of day on Nintendo consoles. Whether on home consoles, portable consoles or even on the hybrid console. The only opus of the Fallout saga to have seen the light of day on a Nintendo machine is Fallout Shelter, the spin-off in mobile game that was ported to Switch in 2018.
However, according to information from insider Imran Khan, we came very close to having the right to a port of Fallout4 on the Nintendo Switch.
The nuclear winter of Fallout 4 in portable mode, or almost
While we just learned a few hours ago an important anecdote about the origin of the Fallout saga, we now learn that we came very close to having the right to a port of Fallout 4, on Switch.
It is indeed in a recent post published on the ResetEra forums that insider Imran Khan confirmed that Bethesda Game Studios mentioned the possibility of seeing Fallout 4 being ported to Switch. Apparently, it was Pete Hines, the former senior vice president of global marketing and communications at Bethesda who retired at the end of 2023, who was behind the project. The latter would have indicated to the teams that they were preparing for an imminent announcement. But in the end, nothing at all.
Unfortunately, the insider does not specify why the project did not see the light of day. We know that Bethesda games, and in particular the port of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim have always been a big success on Switch. In 2018, Pete Hines himself confirmed this by stating that Bethesda's Switch versions were "extremely popular". So, we wonder why Fallout 4 was not also entitled to its port.
Still in 2018, Pete Hine declared that the arrival of Bethesda games on the Switch depended solely on their will and if Bethesda felt that the public would respond: "It will simply depend on us. It will depend on whether we think the game is technically suitable for the platform and whether we think it's something that people want on Switch. In that way, it's literally no different than any other platform we look at or any other game we make."
Clearly, the Bethesda team must have come to the conclusion that Switch players wouldn't be there for a port of Fallout 4. Too bad.
