We can never say it enough, cheating is bad. A few hours ago, it was Felix ‘xQc’ Lengyel, one of the most popular streamers – if not the most popular streamer – on Twitch right now, has paid the price. Caught “stream sniping” an opponent in the middle of a Fall Guys tournament on Twitch Rivals, the former Overwatch pro-gamer was ultimately given a temporary account ban on the video game streaming platform, as well as a six-month ban on Twitch Rivals. The player was also forced to return the money he won. thanks to the tournament.
What is “stream sniping”?
A practice prohibited in e-sports, “stream sniping” consists of a player watching their opponent's Twitch channel (or any other broadcast channel) in the middle of a match in order to obtain information allowing them to take advantage of the situation. In this specific case, xQc followed DrLupo's stream in order to identify his character in Fall Guys and block him. Unsurprisingly, such behavior goes against the rules of the Twitch Rivals tournament, where it is explicitly mentioned as going against the rules of the community.
A decision with serious consequences
While xQc's behavior is obviously reprehensible, and many streamers who participated in the tournament in question called for his ban, many feared that the platform would simply turn a blind eye to the situation. Indeed, xQc is one of the biggest streamers of the moment. Banning him would therefore have relatively serious consequences, for the main person concerned, but also for Twitch, regularly accused of practicing two-tier justice with its users. However, and probably in order to restore its image after the many controversies it has faced, the platform wanted to make a statement by sanctioning its streamer: “We take the conduct of Twitch Rivals players extremely seriously. This type of behavior is unacceptable and will not be taken lightly”, deplored a spokesperson for the tournament. For his part, xQc acknowledged the facts, and publicly apologized on Twitter.
