While Nvidia is still preparing its AI gaming assistant, the G-Assist project, Microsoft is already pulling out all the stops for all Xbox players with Copilot, which transforms into a gaming assistant. As a reminder, the Redmond firm no longer considers the term Xbox to simply refer to a console, but rather to its entire gaming ecosystem, on PC, console, but also televisions and smartphones for example.
In a presentation at the press (via The Verge), we discover a gaming assistant integrated into the Xbox smartphone application. Its name "Xbox Copilot" comes from Microsoft's AI assistant for video games.
Why an in-game assistant?
What use is an AI-powered assistant for video games? Microsoft offers several avenues: tips, guides, but also useful information for the current game.
For example, Microsoft showed a demo of a player being helped during a game of the competitive online game Overwatch 2, one of the many licenses acquired with Activision Blizzard. In this case, the assistant told him not to attack without his teammates, a piece of advice that may seem simple, but which is a common mistake among beginners of Overwatch 2.
Other ideas distilled by the assistant: recommendations for heroes that complement the team well, accompanied by information on this or that hero.
Another demonstration involved the base-building and survival game Minecraft. Copilot was apparently able to react directly to what was happening screen, suggest crafting recipes, or even where to find materials.
Not right away
According to our colleagues' observations, the demonstration still seemed very conceptual, like Nvidia's at Computex in June 2024. The feature is not expected to be released to the public right away. It will first have to go through the Xbox Insiders program to spot bugs and gather user feedback.
In April, Microsoft is expected to officially launch a set of AI features for Xbox players under the name Copilot for Gaming. But Xbox Copilot should therefore not be part of the adventure straight away.
