Apple is reportedly working on a real-time translation feature for its AirPods, according to the well-informed Mark Gurman. If an English-speaking user hears someone speaking French, the iPhone will translate and send the English audio to the AirPods; in return, the smartphone will broadcast the user's words in the language of the other person. And of course, it will work in multiple languages.
Almost like in Star Trek
In 2020, Apple developed a Translate app for iPhone. It's discreet but quite effective at translating simple sentences and everyday words. All locally, without having to go through remote servers.
This new feature, which brings AirPods closer to the universal translator from Star Trek, would be offered with iOS 19, expected this fall. The future operating system, as well as iPadOS 19 and macOS 16, should also be entitled to a major facelift.
This real-time translation function is far from being a first on the market. Google has been offering something equivalent for years with the Pixel Buds Pro, but the operation is not very fluid; You have to hold your finger on the earpiece to activate the translation, present your smartphone to the person you're talking to so they can read the answer... There's certainly a way to offer something more transparent.
Apple is constantly adding new features to its AirPods. The Pro 2 models are thus capable of transforming into hearing aids (unfortunately not everywhere).
