The entire AI industry has been eagerly awaiting GPT-5, OpenAI's future major large language model (LLM), as the company faces pressure from increasingly fierce competition. But in the meantime, the public will have to wait for GPT-4.5, an intermediate version whose release was made official this evening.
The rumors came from an article by Bleeping Computer. Earlier in the evening, Internet users noticed that the beta branch of the Android application offered them to "try GPT-4.5, the largest and most recent model" from the American company. Enough to confirm that the deployment of the new version was imminent.
A series of very eloquent screenshots published by engineer Tibor Blaho also offered us a small preview of the changes associated with this version. We can see that the interface has been significantly overhauled, including the relocation of the Deep Research, Canvas and DALL-E functions (the image generation tool integrated into the chatbot for a few versions) to a new, more condensed and coherent menu.
Back to basics
In terms of performance and additional features, the virtual conference given this evening by OpenAI helped to lift the veil on the future of OpenAI AI. Despite the impressive performance of the o1 and o3 models, it intends to return to a more conventional approach with GPT-4.5. This model is thus designed to:
- Answer most questions quickly
- Become the default model in ChatGPT
- Serve as a transition while waiting for GPT-5
It is important to note that, according to OpenAI, GPT-4.5 remains less efficient than the o1 and o3 models, particularly in tasks requiring complex reasoning, and therefore longer. It will however be able to offer natural interaction, to rely on a broader knowledge base, as well as increased “emotional intelligence”. The number of AI hallucinations has also been revised downwards, promises the American giant.
ChatGPT Pro subscribers first
The bad news is that not everyone will be able to benefit from it immediately. The GPT-4.5 model is already accessible to ChatGPT Pro subscribers and developers via the API. Its integration into the ChatGPT Plus offer is planned for next week. Be careful, however, if GPT-4.5 represents a significant advance, OpenAI positions it as a transitional step. The company is already working on GPT-5, which aims to merge the capabilities of the GPT and o3 models. The latter should mark a major turning point in the company's history, thanks to its advanced reasoning and multimodal processing capabilities.
