Wi-Fi 5, whose specifications date back to 2013, has had its day... at least at Bouygues Telecom. The ISP announced on Clubic that the "historic" Bbox Fit will be retired, the entry-level model being the last vestige of 802.11ac in the catalog. Bouygues Telecom presents itself as "the first operator in France to withdraw all our Wi-Fi 5 offers." Free, SFR, and Orange still offer Wi-Fi 5 boxes.

A first for an ISP in France
This technology "was good for ADSL," explains Bruno Duarte, consumer director at Bouygues Telecom, whose 8 out of 10 fixed-line customers are connected to the internet via fiber. The ISP will therefore replace its white Bbox with the Bbox Must (Wi-Fi 6), which currently represents the mid-range of its offering. A rather good deal for future subscribers, who will gain in connectivity and benefit from a significant increase in terms of speed: the Bbox Fit downloads at a maximum of 600 Mbit/s, compared to 2 Gb/s for the Bbox Must.
Bouygues could, however, be satisfied, if one can call it that, with a download speed of 1 Gb/s for the future Bbox Fit offer. It remains to be seen whether the ISP will take advantage of this to raise its prices. Currently, the Bbox Fit plan costs €19.99 per month for 12 months, then €32.99 with a one-year commitment. The Bbox Must costs €34.99 per month for 12 months, then €41.99. The switch should take place in the coming days, probably on March 31st.
The company will take the opportunity to market the Bbox Ultym on its website. Currently, the new box (Wi-Fi 7) is only available in the ISP's stores.
