The latest beta version of iOS 18.4 brings several new features, including a modification to CarPlay that aims to optimize the display on larger screens. This update update, spotted on Threads, now allows displaying a third row of icons, making it easier for users with large screens in their vehicles to access applications.
A CarPlay interface adapted to large screens
The modification consists of adding a third row of icons, replacing the usual two rows. This new configuration is only activated on vehicles with a sufficiently large screen, such as the Toyota Tundra equipped with a screen of up to 14 inches. Thanks to this arrangement, users can access their applications more quickly, without having to change pages. An evolution of the interface that meets the expectations of a market where the screens integrated into vehicles are increasingly larger.
A simplified user experience
The addition of this third row also makes navigation on CarPlay more intuitive. Drivers now have easier access to a greater number of applications on a single screen. This reduces distractions related to navigating the interface and thus improves safety while driving. Apple is thus correcting a flaw in its interface that can make a significant difference for increasingly demanding users, without making major changes to the system.
No revolution for Apple's auto interface with iOS 18.4 therefore, while the next generation CarPlay is still awaited. Meanwhile, users have to make do with changes from popular app makers, like Waze, which recently improved its interface on CarPlay.
