Google is finally taking action to resolve issues affecting Chromecast 2 and Chromecast Audio. In a support page, the American giant announced that it has "begun rolling out a fix for the issue with Chromecast (2nd generation) and Chromecast Audio devices". The company states that the rollout "will be completed in the coming days" and that it is necessary to keep your device connected to receive the life-saving update. We can confirm that this rollout is underway and that older Chromecasts are operational again as of yesterday evening (Thursday, March 13). If you are affected and have not reset your device, you do not need to do anything. You just have to wait for the update to silently install on your Chromecast.
Since Sunday, March 9, many users have been complaining about being unable to use their Chromecast properly. This outage was particularly worrying, especially after the Chromecast range was discontinued in favor of the Google TV Streamer. Given the scale of the problem, Google quickly indicated that a solution would be deployed, while some users found a temporary solution. The origin of the problem remains officially unknown, but it seems to be linked to an expired SSL certificate embedded in to the 2015 Chromecast firmware. This certificate expired on March 9, 2025, and was reportedly not renewed in time by the technical teams.
Problems may persist
Google has emphasized that you should not reset Chromecasts. If your device is not working and you have already attempted a reset, Google specifies that you may still encounter problems. This reset would prevent the device from being configured, and the company is committed to resolve this issue "as soon as possible", recommending checking its support page for updates. Indeed, resetting a Chromecast disconnects it from Wi-Fi, and it is difficult to reconnect due to the outage. We will keep you informed of the situation on the Journal du Geek, as we have done since the beginning of this case.
In the meantime, it is possible to temporarily "fix" your Chromecast by changing the date on your phone. You need to select a date before March 9th (for example, March 8th) to use the Chromecast, but this method doesn't work for everyone. It can still help while you wait for Google's update.
This outage could impact sales of the Google TV Streamer, the successor to the Chromecast, which aims to compete with the Apple TV. Although it's more comprehensive, some users may now turn to alternatives like the Apple TV or Amazon's Fire TV.
