Chromecast failure: Google deploys an "important update" to set the situation

Your good old Chromecast still has a bright future ahead of it despite the arrival of the Google Streamer TV. While a nasty bug had rendered the 2nd generation Chromecast (2015) unusable, causing it to broadcast a rather cryptic message ("untrusted device", in short, an unrecognized device), the Mountain View firm returned to the matter in an official communication.

On March 14, 2025, a patch was deployed with the sole condition of not having restored the good old TV stick to factory settings. If this is your case, you'll have to wait a little longer, but there is light at the end of the tunnel.

A solution for those in a hurry

In an email addressed to its users, Google mentions a "major update for your Chromecast." In addition to informing those who may not have heard of the patch released last week, Google is giving an update to users who have reset their device. In short, an update to the Google Home app on your smartphone should bring everything back to a functional state.

Unfortunately, Google does not detail the reason that caused this bug. A user on Reddit suggests that it's simply an outdated certificate.
