Discord, the messaging service used by all gamers and communities of all kinds, will soon change a central point of its platform. Soon, all users will be required to change their username, without exception. This is due to the complete overhaul of the service's identification system, which aims to be clearer, simpler, and more accessible.
In a long blog post, the founders of Discord explain that the popularity of the network has grown to such an extent that managing the large number of users is becoming a headache. The reason is the complexity of of searching for a user on the platform that prevents the democratization of community gatherings. This is why the firm is going to implement a completely new system.
A unique @ to identify them all
Discord criticizes its current identification for having usernames that are too complicated to remember, due to the case (upper/lower case) but also the numbers that follow your nickname. These are called discriminators and are mandatory to add a friend. The problem is that most members do not remember this number and a bad entry can cause you to add the wrong profile. To counter this, you will now have to define a nickname preceded by the symbol “@”. This is intended to be unique, so you will have to act quickly if your choice is made and it is one of the frequent preferences.
This name will be different from your username, which may be similar to other profiles, and may be embellished with emojis or special characters. This is already what we find on Tiktok, Twitter and Instagram, the younger generation should therefore not have a problem with this system. Unfortunately the functionality is not yet available to everyone, Discord proceeds in waves. The platform will therefore send you a notification when your turn has come, but by then, your favorite nickname could already be taken.
A good thing for a bad thing?
While the intention is laudable on the part of Discord, it still raises some questions and concerns on the part of users. The current system is certainly too complex to bring together different community members more effectively when they meet, but it is a guarantee for some of not being approached by just anyone in any way.
Discord is famous and appreciated precisely because it is often a haven of peace for its users who carefully select the people with whom they get in touch, unlike other social networks. The reception of this news is therefore likely to make a bit of noise, although the inevitable is already underway, and for the best in the end.
