Does Borderlands 4 release date announce the arrival of GTA 6?

Last night, PlayStation held its very first State of Play of the year. This was supposed to reveal new images as well as information on the upcoming video game releases on PS5 and/or PSVR 2. The audience was served. Although the overall presentation was disappointing in terms of first-party titles, third-party games had a big part during the 45-minute conference.

Many trailers and release dates were indeed revealed, notably for Borderlands 4. The next entry in the franchise is finally available concrete, for the beginning of the fall. Players will be able to get their hands on Borderlands 4 on September 23, 2025, about a month after Mafia: The Old Country, another game from 2K Games.

This will not have gone unnoticed, but the publisher is giving itself a fairly tight window of opportunity between the release of two big games. Especially since the third expected is GTA 6, still scheduled for 2025 according to the latest news. For a few days, rumors have been circulating that 2K wanted to release GTA 6 between these two games. If it seems almost unthinkable now, can the release date of Borderlands 4 tell us more about that of GTA 6?

Promises that never existed

First, let's correct the common thinking. No, neither Rockstar nor 2K nor Take-Two have promised to place the release of the aforementioned games in this chronological order. In fact, official information regarding GTA 6 has not been communicated since the call to investors in which the publisher confirmed again the availability of the game before the end of this year. Everything else was to be taken with a grain of salt, since nothing has been made official by any of the parties involved.

That being said, it now seems unrealistic that GTA 6 will get a September or October release date. Borderlands is a franchise that is particularly appreciated by players and the fourth installment is one of the most anticipated games this year. 2K Games would therefore not risk overshadowing or diminishing the potential success of one of its cows to milk by releasing GTA 6 just a few weeks before or after.

With these assumptions, we can therefore imagine that the Rockstar Games title will not be released before the end of the year, in November or December at the very least. The Borderlands 4 trailer is therefore an indicator to take into account in this completely new situation, both for players and for other publishers who are patiently waiting for the moment to announce their own dates for this year without exposing themselves to the same risks as 2K Games games. But it is not revealing enough to teach us more about the release date of the most anticipated game of the next 10 years.
