In a few years, Twitch has established itself in the field of video game streaming. The firm has no less than $300 million last year, just with the ads broadcast on the platform. A success that did not fall on deaf ears and which pushed Facebook to launch its own application. A spokesperson for the social network announced the imminent launch of the Facebook Gaming app in the New York Times. The one that is due to arrive on April 20 on Android, will offer an experience similar to lives Twitch and Youtube. “Investing in gaming in general has become a priority for us because we see gaming as a form of entertainment that really connects people” explains the head of the application at Facebook. It must be said that in this period of health crisis and confinement, users of the social network need to be entertained more than ever. The launch that was planned for June will therefore have been brought forward to meet the strong demand.
To assert itself against the dominance of Twitch, Facebook aims to make the process easier with its “Go live” button. The feature allows users to download streams from other mobile games on the same device with just a few button presses. Once the live stream is launched, it will appear on the player's personal page so that their friends and followers can join in. At its launch, Facebook Gaming will not yet use advertising and will rely on donations from the communities of different streamers through the “Level Up” function. Thanks to the virtual currency “Stars”, fans will be able to support content creators like with “bits” on Twitch. Facebook Gaming has also partnered with several personalities from the universe like Ronda Rousey, Gonzalo “ZeRo” Barrious or even Corinna Kopf. The download is already possible and the configuration is substantially identical to that of Twitch. After selecting their interests, the user is invited to subscribe to several content creators. Then, a news feed allows you to follow the activity of your favorite streamers. It remains to be seen whether Facebook will succeed in creating a loyal community, there where Youtube Gaming had toû renounce after 4 years of existence.
