YouTube will make a new audio mode available to its Premium subscribers, which offers a better bitrate, and therefore better quality. superior.
In the latest beta version of YouTube, Android Authority discovered lines of code referring to a feature for adjusting the quality audio of a content, regardless of the video quality. This would be a first for the streaming platform, which has never offered such an option to its users.
Currently, there is only one audio format on YouTube, Opus 251, which is based on a bitrate of 128 kbps and a sampling frequency of 48 KHz. It is used regardless of the quality of the video being played, from 144p to 4K. But this situation should soon change.
A quality High Audio Quality Coming to YouTube
According to Android Authority's findings, users will soon be able to choose between three audio modes:
- Auto, which adjusts the quality based on your internet connection speed
- Normal, which likely refers to the current 128 kbps Opus 251
- High, which should improve the bitrate to, say, 256 kbps
Not everyone should be eligible for this higher audio quality, as it would be reserved for YouTube Premium subscribers only. For the platform, this is an additional argument to convince users to subscribe to its paid offer. YouTube has already used this kind of strategy with its 1080p Premium. The video streaming service has been offering 1080p quality with a higher bitrate, and therefore a sharper image, to its YouTube Premium customers for some time now, while others have to settle for a lower-quality 1080p.
Be careful, it is possible that not all videos will be affected by this new, more efficient audio mode. During its last tests, YouTube reserved 256 kbps audio for only certain music videos. If you're not a music lover, or if you listen to your music through Spotify, Deezer, Apple Music, or another service, this option may not be very useful to you.
