Gemini on iPhone, or how Google could boost Apple Intelligence

Gemini on iPhone, or how Google could boost Apple Intelligence

A new leak from a code analysis indicates that Apple has changed Apple Intelligence in an update to the iOS 18.4 beta. Now, the option to choose between “Google” and “OpenAI” to power Siri appears in the iPhone settings. This development echoes comments made at WWDC24, where Craig Federighi mentioned Apple's interest in integrating third-party models, including the highly anticipated Google Gemini.

Google Gemini soon to be integrated into Apple Intelligence?

After ChatGPT on iPhone, it would be Gemini's turn to come and help Siri. According to an analysis by Aaron Perris on X, the recent backend update of iOS 18.4 includes references to the "Google" and "OpenAI" options within Apple Intelligence. This change suggests that the integration of Google's AI could happen soon, even if it is not yet included in the final version of iOS 18.4.

The stated objective would be to enrich the responses provided by Siri by combining the expertise of different AI models. Thus, by offering users the possibility of choosing between several artificial intelligence engines, Apple hopes to improve the relevance and contextualization of responses during voice interactions.

Pending an update Siri Update…

Google recently unveiled its new Gemini 2.0 models, including a version geared toward reasoning. These innovations could be deployed on certain iPhone models, including the iPhone 15 Pro, as well as the iPhone 16, 16 Pro and the new iPhone 16e. At the same time, Apple is reportedly preparing to launch its own conversational model for Siri, which would see the light of day in iOS 19.

These developments reflect a constantly changing market where Apple has fallen behind the competition and must temporize by integrating into Siri and Apple Intelligence more advanced solutions like ChatGPT and Gemini.
