Android 16 Live Updates are Google's answer to Apple's "Live Activities" launched in 2022 through iOS 16.1. The principle is the same: it involves displaying real-time event notifications on the screen. They appear in the notification panel, on the lock screen and the smartphone's home screen.

Using an application developed specifically to demo Live Updates, Android Authority was able to activate the famous alerts with beta 2 of Android 16. They are actually impossible to miss: notifications are positioned below the media player, above the important conversations panel.

Last week, Google delivered the beta 2.1 of Android 16. A minor version that shouldn't have contain some important new features, but ultimately there is one that concerns Google Maps. Live Updates can now appear in the Android status bar. And the Google Maps app already supports this option.

This is very interesting, because you always have information such as arrival time and route instructions (next turn, etc.) in front of you. Of course, the badge is very small and there is no question of displaying an entire novel in it, but it is nonetheless practical. When several apps send Live Updates, the status bar hosts several badges that shrink, even if it means cutting off the text inside.

Touching the badge is the same as displaying the entire notification. No need to lower the entire panel. Development is far from complete, there are still issues on the lock screen. Nevertheless, it bodes well for the final version of Android 16 which will arrive during the spring.
