Google Officially Buried Assistant for the benefit of Gemini

Google Officially Buried Assistant for the benefit of Gemini

After nearly ten years of loyal service, Google Assistant (launched in 2016) will be retiring, replaced by Gemini on almost all Android smartphones. Google already recommends installing Gemini instead of Assistant, and the trend will only grow. In the coming months, more and more mobile users will switch to Gemini, and later this year, Google Assistant will simply no longer be accessible on most smartphones or available for download in app stores.

There is one exception, however: users of smartphones running Android 9 and/or those without at least 2GB of RAM will be able to continue using Google Assistant. This probably doesn't represent a lot of people, but still, Assistant won't be completely buried (just yet).

The company also announced that tablets, cars, and devices connected to smartphones (headphones, watches) will also be moving to Gemini. Speakers, screens, and connected TVs will also be entitled to a "new experience" Gemini, but in the meantime, Google Assistant will continue to work on these devices.

The launch of the Pixel 9 last summer already put a nail in the coffin of Google Assistant: Gemini is enabled by default, while leaving the option to return to Google Assistant. Gemini is now available in more than 40 languages and in more than 200 countries. Google very regularly adds new functions for its new look assistant.
