Announced three months ago at the last Game Awards, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet is shaping up to be the next very ambitious game from Californian studio Naughty Dog. After cult titles like Uncharted and most recently The Last Of Us, the "Dogs" are actively working on their new license. Unfortunately, we shouldn't expect to see it arrive on PlayStation right away.
Intergalactic: the next Naughty Dog game not before 2027?
Naughty Dog hadn't offered new licenses since 2013 and the release of the first The Last Of Us. Suffice it to say that the arrival of Intergalactic The Heretic Prophet is therefore a big event for fans. It will be the tenth license in the studio's history, since its creation in 1984.
During The Game Awards, we were treated to a first glimpse of the game, with a long trailer of more than four minutes that seems to show us a very ambitious game and rather advanced in its development. Neil Druckmann, the co-president of Naughty Dog had already repeatedly insisted that he no longer wanted to announce games too early so as not to keep fans waiting too long. The Last Of Us Part II was announced in December 2016, forcing fans to endure a long wait of almost four years.
So, after the announcement of Intergalactic, it was thought that Naughty Dog's game would be ready to arrive as early as next year. Alas, according to journalist Jason Schreier, not really. The game is expected to be released in 2027 in the best case scenario. In response to a user on the ResetEra forums, Schreier stated that he was almost certain that the game, like The Witcher 4, would not arrive next year.
Remember that Intergalactic The Heretic Prophet began its pre-production phase in 2020, just after the release of The Last Of Us Part II. This means that currently, Naughty Dog is already four years into production. If it arrives in 2027, this will mean that the game will have required more than six years of development, which is a record for the studio, and which is extremely long for a narrative single-player game like Naughty Dog is used to making.
To date, The Last Of Us Part II is Naughty Dog's biggest project and will have required four years of production. If this information turns out to be true, there would be a good chance that Intergalactic will indeed be the studio's first open-world game since Jak3 in 2005. This would justify such a long production time.
