Minecraft: the film looks really ugly but just as fun

Minecraft: the film looks really ugly but just as fun

In a few weeks, a new feature film adapted from a cult video game will hit theaters. Minecraft: The Movie will be released on April 2, eleven years after its initial announcement. This project therefore began before the redemption of adaptations (following productions such as Super Mario Bros: The Movie or the series The Last of Us) and this is not necessarily a good sign. Since its first trailers, the feature film has suffered from its special effects, which were considered too crude, even disturbing. It must be said that some of the game's creatures absolutely do not lend themselves to the realistic direction taken here.

If we add to that the incrustation of humans in the environment which gives the impression of a failed montage or a visual filter for webcam, Minecraft: The Movie checks all the boxes of a visual disaster. But that does not mean that the entire production will be bad. With its latest trailer, the adaptation of the creative title finally gets to the heart of the matter to distract us from its few graphical flaws. No one expects a true masterpiece, but this film could well have some nice surprises in store for us.

A humor tailored for gamers

Putting aside the artistic direction which will surely not cease to be debated – despite some convincing environments like the Nether – the tone and jokes used in the new clips still manage to make you smile. The bucket of water to avoid fall damage, the elytra that are difficult to control the first time... This production seems to take the adaptation exercise seriously by drawing on the players' experiences. After the success of Mario and Sonic on the big screen, the studios have understood that references to the chain allow you to brush the fans in the right direction. And it works.

While the best comic scenes have not all already been revealed in the trailers, the rest of the film looks promising. So yes, it will have to make some concessions visually speaking, but the wacky (or almost meme-like) approach to the world of Minecraft at least gives it the benefit of the doubt. Some projects have neither attractive visuals nor hit-the-mark jokes, and even fewer plots. Hello Borderlands. Minecraft: The Movie still has a chance to please, but do you believe it?
