More than 65 million PS5 on the market

More than 65 million PS5 on the market

It's official, the PS5 has just surpassed the 65 million consoles sold mark in just under four years. Indeed, it was during its latest fiscal report that Sony confirmed that its latest console had just reached 65.5 million sales during the last quarter. A great feat for the PlayStation 5, which will celebrate its fourth anniversary on November 12 in the USA and on November 19 in Europe.

The PS5 will soon be in the top 10 best-selling consoles

More than 65 million PS5 on the market

By reaching 65.5 million copies sold, the PS5 becomes the thirteenth best-selling console in the history of video games. It thus surpasses the Nintendo NES, released in 1983 and which has 61.9 million consoles sold, but nevertheless remains behind several consoles including:

  1. The PS2 (2000) and its 155 million copies
  2. The Nintendo DS (2004) and its 154 million copies
  3. The Switch (2017) and its 146 million copies
  4. The Game Boy & Game Boy Color (1989/1998) and its 118.7 million copies
  5. The PS4 (2013) and its 117.2 million copies
  6. The PlayStation (1994) and its 102.4 million copies
  7. The Nintendo Wii (2008) and its 101.6 million copies
  8. The PlayStation 3 (2007) and its 87.4 million copies
  9. The Xbox 360 (2005) and its 84 million copies
  10. The Game Boy Advance (2001) and its 81.5 million copies
  11. The PSP (2004) and its 80 million copies
  12. The Nintendo 3DS (2011) and its 75.9 million copies

The PS5 remains behind compared to the PS4. In December 2017, four years after its release, Sony's console had accumulated 70.6 million units sold worldwide. However, it is important to note that the PS5 had to face two years of major shortages (between 2020 and 2022) following Covid and semiconductor power supply problems.

So, it still remains a very nice feat with relatively impressive figures. Finally, despite the two years of shortages, the PS5 is "only" 5 million behind the PS4, which had a clear path to

YEARSPS4 SALESPS5 SALES
First year (2014/2021)18.2 million7.8 million (shortage Covid)
Second year (2015/2022)30 million24 million (Covid shortage)
Third year (2016/2023)53.4 million50 million
Fourth year (2017/2024)70.6 million65.5 million

Of course, these figures do not take into account the PS5 Pro which has only been available since yesterday. The first sales figures for this new version of the PS5 will be taken into account in the next quarterly report at the beginning of 2025. For its part, Microsoft cannot say the same. The Xbox Series X/S reportedly reached 28 million units last September. This is still much more positive than the sales figures for the Xbox One. As a reminder, Microsoft's previous console sold only 49 million units between November 2013 and November 2019.
