Since the release of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in 2017, the franchise's timeline has been a hotly debated topic within the fan community. If you didn't already know, Link's many adventures published over the past 37 years are all part of a single, branching timeline. This meticulous organization was first revealed with the publication of the famous Hyrule Historia book, released in December 2011 in Japan. While the few Nintendo 3DS titles are already came to graft themselves into the official timeline after some clarifications from the Kyoto firm, the question of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom was still pending until then.
However, visitors to the Nintendo Live 2024 event organized in Sydney last weekend made a strange discovery. A wall decoration dedicated to the History of Hyrule finally gave some elements of response concerning the placement of the last two opuses in the chronology. On its graph, Nintendo has chosen to separate the two titles from the rest of the timeline, much to the surprise of fans who find themselves all the more confused. But is this a real decision or simply a status quo?
The creation of a new timeline?
Breath of the Wild has not failed to give experts in the world of Hyrule a hard time. With its many references to the rest of the franchise, this title has never managed to convince fans of a justified placement in the timeline. The same goes for Tears of the Kingdom which continued to expand this world established in 2017. And against all odds, it seems that Nintendo is also incapable of making a decision. By clearly separating these games from the rest of the franchise visually, while failing to connect them or offer them a new starting point, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom still seem stuck in the limbo of uncertainty.
The Kyoto firm is not getting involved and prefers to remain evasive, also leaving the possibility of a new timeline hanging. After all, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is about to make its debut on Switch and promises to shake up the codes of the license. It is not impossible that this new adventure dedicated to Princess Zelda will also be anchored in a new branch of the timeline. We will now have to be patient before discovering if it is indeed a reboot of the universe, because Nintendo is not the type to communicate on this subject. In your opinion, what does this separation from the rest of the franchise mean?
