The race for video game adaptations never ends. After the films and series based on major video game franchises, projects that are at least unexpected are starting to surface. There seems to be no limit to the eligibility criteria for such preferential treatment. Today, we learn from Deadline that the FPS High on Life – initially released on PC and Xbox in 2022 – is getting its own animated series. The wacky shooter developed by Squanch Games has established itself as one of the biggest hits in the Game Pass catalog, which is more than enough of a reason to make an adaptation possible. But in this case, the title's legacy may well come into conflict with the nature of the project.
The studio behind High on Life was founded by Justin Roiland, the now-controversial creator from the famous Rick and Morty franchise. It is also by drawing on the characteristic aesthetics of the series that this FPS has managed to attract the attention of players. In fact, adapting a game itself inspired by a television program for television is not a bit risky? The man with the head of the project probably does not share this opinion.
A game actor takes up the torch
In High on Life, players had the pleasure (or not) of living a space adventure alongside talking weapons. These living guns are certainly the most memorable characters in the title. One of them was played by J.B. Smoove, an American actor best known for his role as Leon Black in the sitcom Larry and His Navel. Now at the head of his own production company (Alternate Side Productions), Smoove wants to return the favor to the teams behind High on Life by offering them a place on television:
“The developers at Squanch Games invited me to join them in the gaming world and now I'm helping them enter the world of television! (…) High on Life is wacky, weird and wonderful, and the show will be even more so! Get ready to laugh in space with unforgettable characters like me! We're ready to go!,” he told Deadline.
Production is still in its early stages at this point, so no release window has been revealed. It seems, however, that J.B. Smoove is set to reprise his role in the game, and it is not impossible that the rest of the voice cast will follow him. It remains to be seen whether the teams behind Rick and Morty will take care of the animation. Let us recall, however, that Justin Roiland was ousted from all projects following accusations of domestic violence.
