PlayStation VR2: An incredible functionality is preparing to arrive (and this is not a joke)

PlayStation VR2: An incredible functionality is preparing to arrive (and this is not a joke)

More than a year after its release (almost two years), Sony's PlayStation VR2 is far, very far from being a success. The communication and support from the Japanese firm are light years away from what they were for the first PSVR in 2016 which had quickly become the market leader. Almost two years after the release of the PSVR2, the results are pretty sad, with very few big games, almost no communication, and zero promotion.

However, and it may be the magic of Christmas, we learn today that the manufacturer plans to bring a fairly interesting new feature to its accessory: hand tracking.

The PlayStation VR2 receives new features

After receiving its compatibility PC During the year, we learned that the PlayStation VR2 controllers would soon become compatible with the Apple Vision Pro. Sony was thus demonstrating its desire to make its headset and accessories more accessible. Unfortunately, this did not allow PSVR2 owners to discover new experiences. At least, for the moment.

Because yes, it seems that Sony has not completely forgotten about its virtual reality headset. According to UploadVR, Sony recently demonstrated the PlayStation VR2 with support for hand tracking without a controller. This demo would have taken place at SIGGRAPH Asia 2024, an academic conference and trade show focused on "computer graphics and interactive techniques."

Of course, Sony has not communicated on this yet. However, the manufacturer published a description of the demo specifying that the hand tracking functionality is already available with the PS5 development kit. However, in May 2023, Sony filed a patent for the a patent for several different hand tracking features.

It is not yet known whether Sony plans to release an update to bring this new feature to its headset. It is conceivable that as early as next year, Sony could offer a PSVR2 bundle without controllers to reduce the cost of the headset and offer PSVR Sense2s for sale individually. Thanks to this, it will be possible to purchase the controllers separately, for owners of the Apple Vision Pro and PSVR2 players who do not want to play with their hands all the time.
