Plex increases its prices and imposes restrictions on remote reading

Plex subscriptions will increase starting April 29. The Plex Pass, the premium service that unlocks advanced features—unlimited remote streaming, offline mode, intro skipping, improved transcoding—will cost $6.99 per month or $69.99 per year. The perpetual license will increase to $249.99. That's a significant price increase: currently, the Pass costs $4.99/month, $39.99/year, or $119.99 forever. The good news is that you can subscribe to Lifetime for the current price until April 29th!

No more free remote viewing

Existing and new subscribers will be affected, except for those who have already purchased a lifetime Plex Pass. And that's not all. Plex also announced that remote viewing, i.e. streaming outside of the local network, will no longer be free. Two options will be offered, also starting at the end of April: the Plex Pass or a new formula, the Remote Watch Pass, at $1.99/month or $19.99/year.

This new subscription will allow the subscriber to access a remote Plex server whose address it has. There is a small subtlety to be aware of: if the owner of the remote Plex server has a Plex Pass, then logged-in users will still have access to it for free. In short, the Remote Watch Pass only concerns users who do not have a Plex server and want to access a remote server without Plex Pass.

To sweeten the pill, Plex also announces that the iOS and Android mobile app will no longer require a one-time payment to lift the free playback limit (only one minute so far). The restriction disappears: LAN playback will be completely free on mobile.

Plex is motivating these changes by inflation on the one hand, but also by the necessary investments in new features, among which a new advanced server management tool, an open API for developers and the integration of Common Sense Media to help filter content according to the age of the children.
