Pokémon TCG: All about the new Team Rocket extension

Pokémon TCG: All about the new Team Rocket extension

The Pokémon Trading Card Game is entering a new era. With the release of the Pokémon Trading Card Game (EV09) expansion this Monday, March 24, the TCG is reinstating a mechanic beloved by players and collectors alike: Trainer Pokémon. The Pokémon Teracrystals are finally taking their final bow (and it's not too soon) in favor of much more interesting cards. With Mashynn, Nabil, Lillie, and N headlining this new set, Pokémon Trading Card Game is already making a splash. The hit store is a hit, but its successor promises to be even more popular. The Destiny Rivalries (EV10) expansion, honoring Team Rocket and other trainers, has officially launched in France on May 30th.

The perfect expansion for fans of the video game

While Adventures Together is slowly but surely launching Pokémon trainer cards, Destiny Rivalriesis getting into the thick of things with iconic faces from the video game franchise. Players and collectors will be able to discover 83 cards entirely dedicated to Team Rocket – ranging from Giovanni's Pokémon to those of the minions, including exclusive items – as well as 17 Pokémon-ex from cult trainers, such as Lute (the protagonist of Silver and Gold) and his Ho-Oh or Cynthia and her Garchomp.

Upon release, the expansion will be sold in the form of single boosters, displays of 36 boosters, and elite trainer boxes. Players will also be able to open boosters a few weeks in advance by registering for preview tournaments organized in local stores and local leagues throughout France starting May 17.

Some cards are retiring

With the release of Adventures Together, Pokémon cards feature a new letter of the alphabet in their lower left corner: "I". This acronym is far from trivial for TCG players, since it allows them to identify cards that can be legally played in Standard format tournaments. The introduction of this letter marks the departure of another: certain cards are leaving the rotation and therefore becoming obsolete.

This is the case for all cards stamped "F", namely the last cards with yellow borders (therefore published before the Scarlet and Purple block), as well as Pokémon V, V-Star and Radiant. This change will take effect from April 11th. If you were thinking of entering official Pokémon tournaments soon, be careful to build a deck that will be valid post-rotation. It would be a shame to buy overpriced cards that you will no longer be able to play in a few days.
