For years, Microsoft has been tossing around the idea of offering an ad-supported version of Office. Now it has done so, albeit quietly, which is not surprising since the business model of the office suite is open to much criticism. However, for those who absolutely need Word but don't have the budget to buy the suite (or subscribe to it), this may be a solution.

This version of Microsoft 365 is not the web version: it involves downloading and installing Word, Excel and PowerPoint on your PC (only Windows is supported at the moment), clicking on “Skip for now” in front of the sign asking you to register, then select the free version of the suite.
There are many limitations: first, there are only the three “historical” Office software. No Outlook in sight, nor OneNote or Defender protection tools. Second restriction: documents can only be saved in OneDrive, Microsoft's cloud. Of course, it is possible to access these documents on your PC desktop with the OneDrive app.
It is also not possible to add extensions and macros, watermarks, analyze data, create or modify headers and footers, etc. Many functions are missing, as shown on the Beebom website. Oh, and of course... there are ads. A sidebar that is impossible to delete is present in all three software, it displays a banner and from time to time, a 15-second video (the sound is cut).
Impossible to say at the moment if this new version of Microsoft 365 is available in France, it seems that it is deployed sparingly in certain regions of the world. We are also awaiting an official announcement from the publisher.
