A few days ago, we learned through the European Trademark Registry (EUIPO) that Sony Interactive Entertainment had just re-registered the Resistance trademark, until 2035. This license was launched by Insomniac Games during the PS3 generation between 2006 and 2012. After three rather convincing opuses and two spin-offs on PSP and PSVITA much less so, the license ended up disappearing in favor of Ratchet & Clank and Spider-Man on PS4.
Today, we learned that a fourth opus was still pitched by Insomniac Games and proposed to Sony who unfortunately refused to launch the project.
Resistance 4 was in the pipeline
A few days ago, we learned of the retirement of Ted Price, the CEO and founder of Insomniac Games. Following this end of career, the future-ex-CEO of the studio who has created so many great creations over the past 30 years at PlayStation, sat down with us on the latest Kinda Funny podcast. It was during this conversation that Ted Price (who will be stepping down next month) made a number of revelations.
Among these revelations, we have confirmation of the existence of a Resistance 4: “Resistance 4. We showed it to Sony and it was a wonderful concept, but in terms of timing and market opportunity, it didn’t work out. But it was the brainchild of a lot of people on the Insomniac team who were passionate about the idea of extending this universe. Because I think Resistance has come up with a really cool alternate history where anything can happen with the Chimera, where they go and what their origins are.”
Unfortunately, we don’t have any more details on the development of Resistance 4. And, we don't really know when this project was supposed to take place, at what period. However, with the recent trademark filing, there are faint hopes that are reborn and we hope that this "wonderful concept" can finally see the light of day in the months and years to come on PS5 or PS6.
