More than ever at Marvel, death isn't final. In 2019, Endgame marked the beginning of a new era for the superhero stable. In front of the Russo brothers' camera, several characters died in a final battle against Thanos. Iron Man and Black Widow sacrificed themselves to save the universe. While Scarlett Johansson donned the Black Widow costume one last time, for her first and only solo film, her time at Marvel Studios seemed over. The actress had previously focused on other iconic universes, and is now preparing to make her debut in the Jurassic World franchise. But, with the upcoming Avengers films on everyone's lips, the question of Natasha Romanoff's return is once again being raised. This wouldn't be the first time Kevin Feige's company has resurrected its idols.
Vision returned for the Disney+ series and will be at the center of a spin-off, while Robert Downey Jr. has announced his participation in the next Avengers on the stage of San Diego Comic-Con this summer. He will play Doom and should give Sam Wilson and his team a hard time. For her part, Natasha Romanoff has indeed disappeared, but not before passing the baton to another Black Widow. Yelena Belova is now wearing the costume. During an interview with InStyle, Johansson mentioned the possibility of her reprising her role. It's not really on the agenda. "Natasha is dead. She's dead. Okay? They (the fans) don't want to believe it. They think she could come back. Look, I think the balance of the entire universe is in her hands. We're going to have to let it go. She saved the world. Let her have that heroic moment.
Tense relations with Disney?
These statements come several years after a legal dispute between the company and the Walt Disney Company. In 2021, the film Black Widow enjoyed a dual release in the few theaters open in the United States and on Disney+. With only $379 million generated worldwide, Cate Shortland's film was not a success, and the bonuses promised to Scarlett Johansson were much lower than expected. Before the Superior Court of Los Angeles, Johansson accused Disney of knowingly "inducing Marvel to terminate the agreement, without justification, in order to prevent Ms. Johansson from fully benefiting from her deal with Marvel." Ultimately, the conflict was quietly settled.
Since then, Scarlett Johansson has not collaborated with the company with the big ears. She was announced to star in a new adaptation of the Tower of Terror, a famous attraction in the parks. The project has not been heard of since the resounding failure of Justin Simien's Haunted Mansion. Moreover, we will see the actress this summer in theaters for Jurassic World: Renaissance directed by Gareth Edwards. She will play opposite Jonathan Bailey and Mahershala Ali. The meeting is scheduled for July 4th.
