Sony could (finally) have found a solution against the scalpers

Sony could (finally) have found a solution against the scalpers

Last week, Sony launched pre-orders for its new ultra-limited "30th Anniversary" collection with PS5s, PS5 Pros, DualSenses and DualSense Edges, and PlayStation Portals in the colors of the very first PlayStation in 1994 to celebrate the brand's 30th anniversary. Unfortunately, the party was quickly spoiled by scalpers who rushed to buy the stock to put the consoles back on sale on eBay at stratospheric prices. Following this, Sony decided to counterattack and set up a new system for pre-ordering the PS5 Pros at come.

PS5 Pro reserved for loyal players

Sony could (finally) have found a solution against the scalpers

To prevent this scourge from happening again and for loyal PlayStation players to be penalized, Sony plans to implement a playtime check for players on PS4 and PS5 to give them access to PS5 Pro pre-orders (in Japan only). So, for people who want to buy a PS5 Pro, they must have no less than 30 hours of play on PS4 or PS5 via their PlayStation Network account between February 22, 2014 and September 19, 2024. If these criteria are not verified, it will not be possible to pre-order a PS5 Pro in the land of the rising sun.

For the moment, this solution is not yet applied in France and Europe. But this could be a first step to put an end to scalpers, even if 30 hours of games in 10 years is probably not a strong enough limit to prevent some scalpers. It would have been preferable for this solution to be implemented earlier and everywhere in the world to avoid the fiasco of the 30th Anniversary collection.

On eBay, consoles are reselling for between 3,000 and up to 10,000 euros. Fortunately, it is now possible to report and remove these shameful ads. More details in our dedicated article.
