What if the PS5 Pro was ultimately a great success? The 799 euro price of the mid-generation console, devoid of a disc drive, raised the hackles of more than one player when it was presented at the beginning of September. A real bad buzz suggesting that Sony's machine would have difficulty finding its audience.
Ultimately, the PS5 Pro is selling as well, if not better than the PS4 Pro at its launch. In an effort to promote its new console, Sony has published a long video discussing the technical capabilities of the PS5 Pro with Mark Cerny at the helm. Above all, we learn that AMD and Sony are working on a new machine learning technology.
Mark Cerny reveals a new Sony project with AMD during a presentation of the PS5 Pro
Mark Cerny, architect of the PS5 and PS5 Pro, held a seminar from the headquarters of Sony Interactive Entertainment in San Mateo, California, to discuss the design secrets of the Japanese firm's latest console. While the PS5 uses AMD's RDNA 2 GPU architecture launched in 2020, the PS5 Pro is based on the RDNA 2.X architecture, as Mark Cerny calls it.
It includes some features from AMD's more advanced RDNA 3 architecture introduced in 2022, as well as ray tracing techniques from the American manufacturer's upcoming RDNA technology. On this occasion, Mark Cerny reveals that Sony and AMD have partnered to design a new technology codenamed Amethyst.
“AMD has been a fantastic partner for SIE for many years. I am honored to announce that we have entered into a deeper collaboration focused on machine learning-based technology for graphics and gameplay».
The PS6, like other machines that AMD is working on, could benefit from it. In addition, both entities want to democratize machine learning through software that is easily accessible to developers to improve their titles. This still nebulous project should not reveal its potential for several years. In the meantime, it's up to you to see if this long presentation of the PS5's architecture motivates you to spend 799 euros to get it.
