Test Backbone One Gen 2, the joystick to take everywhere

Test Backbone One Gen 2, the joystick to take everywhere

As we all know, the mobile video game market is probably the most lucrative of all markets, but it is the one that suffers the most in terms of image in the eyes of gamers. Despite the power of smartphones in recent years, many continue to think, wrongly, that mobile gaming is limited to Match-3 games like Candy Crush and that everything is played on the touch screen.

This is a poor understanding of the market since we have been welcoming a plethora of console games recently and while it is true that playing on the touch screen is not the best in gaming, mainly because your fingers cover the game, in terms of power, the smartphone has nothing to envy other machines. Just look at the latest productions like Resident Evil 4, Hades, Street of Rage 4 or Dead Cell to get an idea and finally, for some, all that's missing is a real controller to be convinced.

That's good since iOS, iPadOS and/or Android all support the controllers on the market in Bluetooth or wired via USB-C. Afterwards, we understand that it is not the most practical. This is where BackBone products come in, including the One, a wired controller (USB-C or Lightning) that transforms your smartphone into a sort of Nintendo Switch Lite. But for a few months now, BackBone has been offering a "Gen 2" of its One controller.

Available in a classic black version or a white PS5 version, the Backbone One Gen 2 is mainly characterized by the possibility of using your smartphone with a case, which was not the case with the Gen 1. You will therefore have to be careful when purchasing. Note that the USB-C version works just as well on Android as on the iPhone 15, which is no longer equipped with a Lightning port but with a USB-C port. Note that the spacing is not large enough to use it on an iPad mini 6, which is a shame because Apple's mini tablet is probably ideal with its screen size.

As you can see from the first few tries, the design is still just as thin, which allows you to take the controller anywhere or still offering an excellent grip. We are always afraid that it is a little too small but this is not the case with this Backbone. The smartphone is perfectly held and depending on the presence of a case or not, Backbone offers small lugs to offer a better position for the smartphone so that it is well wedged.

The Backbone One adapts to any width of smartphone (we tested it on a Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and an Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max) and we did not note any particular problems. The buttons are micro-switches and they are pleasant on a daily basis. They respond well and are responsive. We find a mechanical D-Pad and analog triggers for our pleasure. The controller fits well in the hand and remains super pleasant, even after long gaming sessions.

The Backbone One Gen 2 is available at the price of 199.99 euros in its different versions.
