The PS3 celebrates its 19th birthday… and Sony updates it with this new patch

The PlayStation 3 is celebrating its 19th birthday, but Sony is not abandoning it. A new update 4.92 has just been deployed. It allows it to always read the latest Blu-ray films and improves the stability of the system. If you are still using this console, it is strongly recommended to install it.

The PS3 celebrates its 19th birthday… and Sony updates it with this new patch

While the PlayStation 3 stopped being manufactured in 2017, Sony still continues to provide it with updates punctual updates. This console, which marked an entire generation of players, is still used by some fans. If these upgrades no longer add new features, they remain essential for certain uses.

Sony has just deployed update 4.92 for the PS3. Like the previous ones, this one focuses on improving performance and on a key point: the renewal of the encryption key of the Blu-ray player. Without it, new movies in this format could be blocked from playing.

Sony continues to update the PS3 more than 19 years after its release

This update is part of a Sony habit: the AACS encryption key of the Blu-ray player regularly expires and must be renewed. Unlike the PS4 and PS5, where this process is done automatically, PS3 users must install each system update to continue playing recent Blu-rays. Version 4.92 therefore guarantees compatibility with the latest films released on physical disc.

Beyond this aspect, Sony simply announces an improvement in system performance, without further details. This is therefore a corrective update, which ensures the stability and security of the console. Even if the PS3 has not been supported for the PlayStation Network for several years, it remains a popular platform for some nostalgic players and for those who still use their console as a multimedia player.

How to install update 4.92?

The update update is available directly from the console via “Settings” > “System Update” > “Internet Update“.

If you want to install it manually from a PC, you can download the official file from the “Update using a computer” section of the Sony website in the link below.
