Are you tired of digging through your inbox to find an important old message? Google has heard your groans. With its new update, Gmail is getting a "smarter" search that uses artificial intelligence to sort your emails by relevance, not just date.
Gmail is rethinking how your emails appear
Until now, typing a keyword into Gmail's search bar was like launching a treasure hunt: all emails containing that word were displayed, from the most recent to the oldest. Not very practical when you can't remember the date or the sender. But Google has decided to change that. Gmail now uses AI to identify emails you tend to... open often, those that come from your regular contacts, or those that are simply more likely to interest you.
While this isn't the first time Gmail has helped you search your emails, this new feature goes further. If you search for "contract," for example, Gmail will first display the one you check frequently, even if it's a bit old, rather than an automated message received this morning. The tool adapts to your habits, a bit like a colleague who knows you well and wants to save you time.
You can always return to classic search
If you prefer to keep the good old chronological sorting, no problem. Gmail gives you the choice. A small drop-down menu at the top of the results page lets you switch between "most recent" and "most relevant." Convenient.
This new feature adds to a whole series of AI-powered features already in Gmail: auto-reply, assisted composing, tabbed sorting, email summaries, and more. Despite For its millions of users, Gmail continues to evolve little by little, without disrupting their habits and especially without forcing their hand, which is always appreciated.
