Tired of receiving spam on WhatsApp? Good news, the app will soon impose limits on companies

To remain the world's number one messaging service, WhatsApp is continually improving the user experience on its app. For example, we recently discussed in our columns this upcoming change regarding video calls. To summarize, it will soon be possible to deactivate the camera before accepting a video call. Practical to avoid being caught off guard if you have been careless about shaving. We also know that the app will soon integrate a widget dedicated to Meta AI, which will allow access to Meta's artificial intelligence in one click.

But that's not all. In recent months, WhatsApp has also multiplied features to fight the proliferation of spam on its platform. Last November, we discussed this new feature regarding the blocking of promotional messages. Previously, users could only completely block companies that tended to abuse spam. However, this method posed a problem, since it was no longer possible to view other messages from these contacts, such as order tracking, for example. Now, we can filter only unwanted offers while continuing to enjoy more useful messages.

WhatsApp will limit spam sending for everyone

But as reported by our colleagues at TechCrunch, WhatsApp plans to go even further in spam management. Indeed, the app's teams announced today that it would limit the number of promotional messages that individual users can send to individuals. Specifically, the app plans to implement a monthly quota. While the figures are not yet final, Meta has given for example, a maximum limit of 30 messages per month.

Furthermore, and still according to the American giant, if individual users wish to send more messages to a greater number of people, they will always be able to use status updates and channels. That's not all. The company is also considering implementing similar safeguards for spam sent by professionals. Until now, WhatsApp Business accounts could send promotional messages for free and without limitation. This will soon no longer be the case.

More specifically, the app plans to launch a paid version of WhatsApp Business. Thanks to it, professionals will benefit from additional tools, such as the ability to to schedule the sending of advertisements. During the test phase, merchants will be able to send 250 personalized messages for free, and then they will have to pay to send more. Through all these changes, the idea is to allow users to still receive promotional offers from time to time, without them flooding their inboxes.
