The jokes surrounding Hollow Knight Silksong will have to end one day, but here we are again, in a new cycle of disillusionment. The famous metroidvania remains unavailable six years after its initial announcement, and players are clinging to every scrap of information. After many false hopes followed by a worrying radio silence, the last official announcement dates back to last January, when a developer from the Team Cherry studio affirmed that “Yes, the game is real, its development is progressing and it will eventually be released.” Which is the bare minimum to silence the rumors of a much-feared cancellation.
But while fans were expecting to have to be patient once again, Xbox dropped a clue that no one expected. During this week of the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, the manufacturer posted a blog post that almost went unnoticed despite a major revelation. These few words in honor of the ID@Xbox program dedicated to independent titles speak of Hollow Knight Silksong as a game that is preparing to release.
Hollow Knight before the end of the year: we want to believe it
The last time Team Cherry's metroidvania confirmed a release window, the announcement took place in a Game Pass trailer. Since this rapprochement with Microsoft, everything suggests that the final announcement will take place at an Xbox event. It is therefore not surprising that the mention of Silksong in this blog post arouses suspicion. Is this a real teaser or yet another joke aimed at... tease impatient players?
It's in a paragraph about the Xbox Play Anywhere feature that the manufacturer suggests that Hollow Knight Silksong is coming soon: “In the future, our program promises to be incredible with games like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Descenders Next and FBC: Firebreak which will be playable on all Xbox platforms... but also Hollow Knight: Silksong of course!“
What's the point of mentioning it alongside games coming in the coming months if it's not concerned? To break gamers' hearts, perhaps. The fact remains that after the developers' statement at the beginning of the year, this mention is not insignificant and could well be the omen of a release by the end of the year. Should we believe it? Hope springs eternal, but yet another disappointment could well prove fatal for the reputation of Hollow Knight and Team Cherry. All that remains is to Let's hope this isn't an early April Fool's joke.
