Big names in video games like PlayStation, Nintendo and Xbox all offer a mobile application to help players stay connected to their console. The Xbox application, available on iOS and Android, allows players to manage screenshots of their games, chat with their friends or even discover the titles available in the Game Pass since the dedicated app no longer exists.
However, it is impossible to play Xbox One or Xbox Series games directly from your smartphone (except for remote play). Sarah Bond, president of Xbox, announces that the situation will change following: a US court ruling on October 7 in the case between Google and Epic Games.
Buying and playing games from the Xbox app on Android will be possible from November
Sarah Bond, president of Xbox since October 2023, indicates on her X account that players will be able to buy and play Xbox games directly from the Android app from November. “The court's decision to open the Google mobile store in the United States will offer more choice and flexibility. Our mission is to enable more players to play on more devices, she wrote on October 11.
Indeed, a federal judge in California has just ordered Google not only to open its app store to competitors like Epic Games, but also to no longer require the use of Google Play payment methods in applications distributed on the Google Play Store (which granted it significant commissions).
The Alphabet subsidiary intends to appeal this decision which only concerns the United States. Not enough to prevent Sarah Bond from speaking out on October 11 to announce the possibility to buy and play Xbox games on the Android app.
Please note, this does not mean that players will be able to enjoy any title on their mobile locally. Only certain games should work in cloud gaming. Remember that it is already possible to install games on your console and play them from the Xbox app on mobile thanks to remote play. The lines should not move for the moment in Europe, even if the DMA imposes new rules on competition.
