Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 4G test: there are good reasons to crack for this smartphone at 200 euros

Unveiled earlier this year, the Redmi Note 14 4G is the most affordable model in the new Redmi Note 14 family. Xiaomi presented five different models, including the Redmi Note 14 Pro+ 5G that we tested and the Redmi Note 14 4G. This version allows the brand to have a very affordable device in its range, with a starting price of 203 euros.

For this price, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 offers a fairly decent technical sheet with a fairly modern design, a large AMOLED screen and three photo sensors on the back. This 4G variant also includes an eight-core MediaTek chip and a 5500 mAh battery, compatible with fast charging (33 W). If this configuration has something to seduce on paper, we wanted to know more by testing this smartphone.

We like

Its good quality AMOLED screen

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 4G features a 6.67-inch AMOLED panel with a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels. The dynamic refresh rate ranges from 60 to 120 Hz. These characteristics ensure you enjoy a screen with a fine and fluid display.

This trend is confirmed in use and the screen proves to be one of the strengths of this smartphone. The display quality is there and we can enjoy the benefits of OLED for a reasonable price. The peak brightness of 1800 nits is decent and allows the smartphone to be used outdoors. As a bonus, there is even a fingerprint reader under the screen.

Its comfortable battery life

With a 5500 mAh battery and a limited configuration, one could have hoped for a monster of endurance. This is not really the case and the Redmi Note 14 4G could undoubtedly have done a little better in this exercise. However, its endurance is comfortable and this smartphone will be able to accompany you for two days if you are not addicted to your screen. It will easily last a long day of use and will still have enough juice to go again, at least for half a day, without having to recharge.

Xiaomi adds 33W fast charging, a speed that has tended to stagnate for a few generations. It remains sufficient for a model in this range and will satisfy the majority of users. Indeed, it takes around 1 hour 10 minutes to fully charge the battery... but the charger is not included. The manufacturer regularly offers a combined offer, which can be a good opportunity if you need a new adapter.

Its impressive value for money

Renowned for the value for money of its products, Xiaomi confirms this once again with the Redmi Note 14 4G. For a price around 200 euros, the brand offers us a very balanced smartphone without any major flaws. For this price, it even offers a relatively modern and efficient design:

A good deal, the Redmi Note 14 4G is not without competition and you sometimes have to look within Xiaomi's catalog itself. Among the models often on sale, last year's series or even the Poco X6.

Its honest performances

The Xiaomi Redmi The Note 14 4G is powered by a MediaTek Helio G99-Ultra chip, which is one of the big differences with the 5G variant. It has two "big" ARM Cortex-A76 cores, clocked up to 2.2 GHz, and six "small" Cortex-A55 cores, clocked up to 2.0 GHz. On the GPU side, there's a modest Mali-G57 MC2 GPU. This processor is accompanied by 6 to 8 GB of RAM and 128 or 256 GB of storage space.

Xiaomi's affordable smartphone is not a lightning warhorse and its chip (engraved in 6 nm) is not the most recent. It nevertheless proves to be sufficient for the majority of tasks we entrusted to it, namely browsing, consulting social networks, exchanging via messaging or multimedia.

It is obviously more complicated to running demanding applications on such a model. The same goes for video games, and the most demanding 3D titles require significant sacrifices to run properly. There are no problems with less demanding games found on the Play Store.

Its jack

The headphone jack (3.5 mm) has disappeared from the radar on most smartphones, but it is still present on the Redmi Note 14 4G. A decision that should delight owners of wired headphones who will not need to use an adapter.

We like less

Its limited (but very correct by day) photo panel

The camera block located on the back of the device, with its style very inspired by the iPhone, suggests the presence of a muscular configuration. This is not really the case, even if the Redmi Note 14 does not disappoint with its main sensor (wide-angle) of 108 Mpx (f/1.2). It adds two secondary sensors, namely a 2 Mpx macro lens (f/2.4) and a 2 Mpx depth sensor (f/2.4). The camera skips the ultra-wide angle, and less surprisingly in this price range, the telephoto lens.

This decision to focus on a single sensor is, in my opinion, a good idea in the entry-level segment. After all, Apple is doing the same thing with the iPhone 16 and reminds us that a very good sensor is better than two, or three, bad ones.

The 108 MP sensor fulfills its mission in good conditions, delivering quite decent results. In this price range, it's hard to be disappointed and expect much more, although flaws quickly appear. The contrasts are very marked and the shots lack light, but overall, it's balanced.

The Redmi Note 14 has a 108 MP mode and its photo interface offers x2 and x3 (digital) zooms. This doesn't replace a telephoto lens, but the x2 zoom is largely usable and gives some versatility to the photo part. On the other hand, we feel that the x3 zoom very quickly shows its limits and can only be used in excellent lighting conditions. This trend is confirmed with the x4 or x5 zoom and it becomes difficult to go above.

In low light, the Redmi Note 14 holds its own when it is in the city and can take advantage of the lighting. Without this, it has a lot more trouble taking usable photos.

Its too many bloatwares

The Redmi Note 14 4G arrives with HyperOS 1.0, the overlay based on Android 14. This combination has been equipping many Xiaomi smartphones for a few months, but some recent models are entitled to Android 15 with HyperOS 2.0. This smartphone will benefit from four years of Android updates and six years of security patches.

While waiting for this new version to be rolled out, the current duo works quite well. HyperOS is featured prominently on the Redmi Note 14 and offers a fluid, responsive, and customizable interface. This model isn't as AI-focused as the brand's flagship devices, but it does include some useful features. Most of the options relate to the Gallery app, such as the magic eraser or the ability to change the sky. The device also features Google's artificial intelligence with Gemini.

The real problem with this interface comes from the too many pre-installed apps. These bloatware spoil the user experience and force the user to clean up, which is quite annoying and redundant.

Its screen borders

While it presents itself with a pleasant and efficient design, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 spoils this good impression because of very marked and frankly thick borders. It reminds us that we are in the presence of an entry-level smartphone. It's a bit of a shame, because the rest is nicely executed and the build quality is there.

Its compatibility is only 4G (but we know it in advance)

To keep the price as low as possible, Xiaomi is offering a 4G-only version. While 5G is becoming more widespread, it requires some effort in this range, since the Redmi Note 14 5G officially starts at 303 euros (currently 273 euros). For a device aimed at users on a budget, the difference can be significant.

With a budget of around 200 euros, you can't have it all, and choosing a 4G model isn't necessarily a bad decision. Switching to 5G most often means switching to a more expensive plan... for benefits that aren't always obvious. The Redmi Note 14 4G's target audience isn't necessarily a tech-savvy audience, and 4G is still sufficient.
