YouTube Premium subscribers don't see ads, but they can also get early access to certain features currently being tested. Two of these are particularly noteworthy right now: recommendations directly integrated into your playlist, and the ability to play a video at x4 speed.
Recommendations in the playlist... but not autoplay
It's a small change that could well change your habits on YouTube. The platform has always offered a wide range of recommendations: on the homepage, under videos, or in search results. This time, it's slipping them directly into your playlist, accessible when you manually add several videos to watch in a row.
Suggested videos appear at the bottom of your list, in a new, prominent section. And the good news is, they don't just start playing: it's up to you to decide whether you want to include them or not. This isn't meant to disrupt the feed you've carefully built, but rather to offer you an alternative without having to return to the home page.
The feature is available until April 7, 2025, in the experimental features section reserved for Premium subscribers. Officially announced for Android, it also seems to be available to some iPhone users. To activate it, simply go to the "You" tab, then click on the settings icon at the top right (the small gear), then select "Test new experimental features".
Quadrupled playback speed
Second new feature, and not the least: the possibility to play videos at 4x speed. Until now, the maximum was 2x, which was fine for most content. But for those who like to absorb information at a fast pace, such as tutorials or podcasts, this option opens up new possibilities.
With these new features, YouTube Premium seeks to gradually enrich the user experience, without revolutionizing the way the platform works. Recently, other tests focused on improving the sound for music videos. This gives some additional arguments to YouTube Premium subscription, which represents a certain monthly investment (€12.99/month minimum in France).
