2000 horsepower, 4 engines: Mercedes-AMG wants the craziest electric car by 2025

Mercedes-AMG wants to show its teeth in 2025. Next June, the German brand and its sports division will launch a 4-door coupe seeking to compete with the Porsche Taycan. A first glimpse has just been published, in the form of a teaser, where its elongated silhouette is clearly visible. With such a profile, performance is certain to be high.

Thanks to its subsidiary Yasa, it will be able to carry optimized engines, known as axial flow engines, which will offer maximum power in the minimum space and weight. Mercedes acquired the company in 2021 to strengthen its electrification and performance capabilities and autonomy for its new all-electric AMG range. The engines powering the new coupe are expected to offer 480 hp each, based on the current Yasa range.

If Mercedes-AMG decides to integrate up to four engines into this new model, then its power could reach nearly 2,000 hp. Nothing is less certain, but it would not be surprising if the brand offered such a version (alongside others with fewer engines) since the competition, whether from Porsche, BMW or the new Chinese brands, does not hesitate to easily exceed 1000 hp.

In terms of chassis, this future four-seater model will be based on a specific platform, called AMG-EA. Specific to AMG therefore, initially, but also specific to an electric model. However, AMG is expected to use it later as the basis for another model, this time an SUV. Its launch is scheduled for next year, with plenty of power under the hood once again. One of its competitors, the Lotus Eletre, offers up to 905 in its third and final configuration.

Electric shift

These models will mark a leap forward in electrification for AMG, which still relies on a range of hybrid models. That said, its current C 63 AMG E-Performance could return to its six-cylinder soon, after moving for two years to an electrified 4-cylinder engine, which had particularly disappointed fans of the brand at the time of the announcement. While the V6 would be back, this would not be the case for the V8, an engine that made AMG successful, but which must now give way to electric alternatives, much less noisy, but drastically more efficient.
