The new Science SARU anime

In 2024, the Japanese studio Science SARU struck a major blow with its adaptation of the manga DanDaDan by Yukinobu Tatsu. Effectively mixing science fiction, horror, and romantic comedy, the anime and manga tell the story of Momo, a young high school girl who believes in ghosts, and Okarun, a young nerd who believes in UFOs. Thanks to its very endearing characters and humor, DanDaDan has managed to become one of the most beautiful surprises of fall 2024. If the manga is a great success - more than deserved -, the work of the Science SARU studio on the animation of certain scenes and the compositions of Kensuke Ushio - already at work on the OST of Chainsaw Man - have undoubtedly contributed to the anime's fame.

However, Science SARU does not intend to rest on its laurels and imitate its competitor ufotable, whose efforts are mainly focused on a major license (Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba). The studio, which supported Bones for the animation of certain episodes of Shin'ichirō Watanabe's Space Dandy (Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo) before being entrusted with the production of Devilman Crybaby by Netflix in 2018, instead wants to become one of the pioneers of Japanese animation. This means signing ever more daring projects.

In May 2024, we learned that Science SARU was working on a new adaptation of the cyberpunk seinen classic The Ghost in the Shell by Masamune Shirow, published between 1989 and 1991 by Kodansha. With a release scheduled for 2026, this new project is certainly ambitious! Indeed, in addition to being a masterpiece of Japanese comics, The Ghost in the Shell was adapted several times, notably by the great Mamoru Oshii, who, alongside Shin'ichir Watanabe and Hideaki Anno, is one of the biggest names in Japanese animation.

However, it seems that Science SARU has decided to distinguish itself from Mamoru Oshii's adaptations, as illustrated by this first visual shared on Saturday, April 12. Indeed, readers of the manga will undoubtedly notice that the features of Major Motoko Kusanagi are closer to those drawn by Masamune Shirow. In any case, we are extremely curious to discover this new anime, which promises to be particularly exciting.

In many ways, it is part of a new phenomenon affecting many Japanese animation studios: for several months, we have been regularly discovering reboots and remakes of great classics from the 1980s/1990s. So, after Urusei Yatsura by David Production (based on the eponymous manga by Rumiko Takahashi, already adapted under the title Lamu by... Mamoru Oshii, him again!), Ranma 1/2 by the MAPPA studio (still based on the eponymous manga by the queen of shonen, Rumiko Takahasi), Yaiba by Wit Studios or even Cat's Eye produced by Disney+, fans now have a new nostalgic rendezvous. We can't wait!

In the meantime, don't hesitate to Discover this epic Christmas anime produced by Science SARU, the trailer of which can be found here.
