Are the Switch 1 accessories compatible with the Switch 2?

The Nintendo Switch 2 comes with its share of accessories, but is it possible to keep those from the Switch 1 to use them on the new console? A way to save a few last pennies after paying the new price for games.

Short answer: yes, the Switch 1 accessories are compatible with the Switch 2. The console's development managers confirmed this unequivocally to the press during a roundtable discussion that 01net.com was able to attend.

Having said that, there are, as is often the case, a few usual asterisks to mention. This article will focus on this.

Accessories are compatible*

Let's start with the accessories that are truly compatible, without any further questions. This is the case for the following accessories:

  • Nintendo Switch Pro Controller;
  • The GameCube Controller Adapter.

Next, let's look at the few accessories that are not compatible, without further details. Here they are:

  • The adjustable charging stand;
  • The Switch 1 dock;
  • The Switch 1 HDMI cable;

Then there is a whole list of accessories that are only compatible with the Joy Con 1. This means that you can use them on the Switch 2, but only with connected Joy Con 1s. Here is the list of these accessories:

  • The Joy Con 1 wrist straps;
  • The Joy Con 1 grip (including the charging one);
  • The Joy Con 1 steering wheel;
  • All accessories related to Ring Fit Adventure or Nintendo Switch Sports;
  • The Joy Con 1 charging stand.

Will the Nintendo 64 controller work on the Switch 2? The French want to know

Without detailing them one by one, let's also mention that all old controllers linked to a retro console and adapted to Nintendo Switch 1 controllers will work, but only on compatible games. This suggests that it should still be possible to use it as a Pro Controller on games that don't require full button control.

Let's finish with the microSD card. The Nintendo Switch 2 has changed its standard in this area and requires switching to microSD Express. The microSD cards used on the Switch 1 can still be inserted, but will only be used to view captures recorded on the Switch 1, a very limited use to say the least.
