No, much to the regret of fans of Wolverine, the famous mutant played for over twenty years by Hugh Jackman, the latter was not announced in the cast of Avengers: Doomsday during Marvel's epic live-action last week. Other mutant colleagues of Logan, such as Cyclops, Gambit, Magneto, Charles Xavier, Nightcrawler, and Beast will be featured in the Russo brothers' film, making his absence even more intriguing. Is this a studio strategy to build fan excitement around the character? Has the actor refused to reprise the very physical role of the X-Men? Will a variant played by another actor be introduced on screen? We take stock of the most plausible theories.
#1 He and Deadpool will only appear in Secret Wars
Following the many very exciting announcements concerning Avengers Doomsday, we quickly forget that the film will work in tandem with Avengers Secret Wars, which is scheduled for theatrical release the following year, in 2027. Marvel Studios will therefore have the responsibility of not burning all its "cards" with the first part of this diptych, and to keep some nice surprises for fans in the sequel. Given the popularity of Deadpool and Wolverine, whose joint adventures in 2024 are worth billions at the box office, Kevin Feige will definitely want to bring them back in the future of the MCU, if possible. The hypothesis could be that the superheroes' fight against Dr. Doomsday in Avengers Doomsday results in the death of several of the mutants, and that other X-Men, currently busy with other tasks, come to confront the villain in Avengers Secret Wars. This could also be the case for the different versions of Spider-Man.
#2 Wolverine is indeed in the cast of Avengers Doomsday (but it's a secret)
Last week, Robert Downey Jr. and Marvel confirmed that the cast of Avengers Doomsday is not yet complete. Although already very substantial (there are 27 actors on the bill), other names will be announced soon by the studios. Hugh Jackman is the actor with the longest career in the fictional world of mutants: he appeared in the first Fox trilogy in the 2000s, then in the soft reboots/sequels, as well as in his own trilogy. After hanging up his Wolverine claws following the excellent Logan in 217, he regained his strength and muscle to thwart the TVA's plans in the third Deadpool solo film. This potential ace up Kevin Feige's sleeve could therefore either be 100% a surprise for fans, kept secret until the release of Avengers Doomsday, or revealed at Marvel Comic Con 2025 scheduled across the Atlantic for the end of July.
#3 Avengers Doomsday will introduce a new Wolverine
Our latest theory is that Marvel will make a big splash by introducing a new Wolverine. We're still in the mindset that the many X-Men from Fox's original trilogy announced in the cast of Avengers Doomsday won't survive to the vigilantes' confrontation with Dr. Doom, and are essentially there for "fan service." They would then pass the torch to a new batch of younger actors, heirs to their mutant costumes for the future of the MCU. Hugh Jackman, being tired by the intense physical preparation required for the role of Logan, may have decided not to endanger his health by declining roles in Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars. Kevin Feige would then be choosing, in the greatest secrecy, the future interpreter of the character, and would be preparing us for his arrival with great fanfare. Certainly, some fans would be disappointed, but others would also be enthusiastic and surprised by this change. And you, which of these theories seems most likely to you?
