In a world where digital demands and physical interruptions are commonplace, maintaining focus has become a major challenge, especially in open-plan or home work environments. To meet this growing need, Flipper Devices, the team already known for the Flipper Zero, is launching the Busy Bar, a gadget that promises to be the guardian of your concentration and productivity. Because yes, the project is serious and we couldn't pass up this tech gadget of questionable usefulness.
At the heart of the Busy Bar is a programmable 72 x 16 pixel color LED screen (800 nits) capable of displaying clear and personalized messages (busy, in a meeting, do not disturb, etc.) to clearly signal your unavailability to those around you. It can also display a countdown, indicating precisely when the user will be available again, or even specific information thanks to its open API, opening the door to integrations with third-party services like social networks.
A large button on top instantly turns the display on or off, while a dial lets you set the desired duration for a focus session. For quick checking without having to turn the device, a small secondary monochrome screen is positioned on the back.
Much more than just a flashing screen
But the Busy Bar doesn't just display messages, and that's the whole point of this funny gadget, with a design straight out of another era. It integrates into the physical environment, by placing it on the desk or attaching it to the monitor, and especially the digital one. Equipped with a Wi-Fi connection and a USB-C port, it is compatible with the Matter protocol, allowing it to communicate with home automation ecosystems such as Google Home or Apple Home. It is therefore possible to include the Busy Bar in scenarios and act on connected equipment. Imagine: launching a work session and seeing your lights automatically adjust or your background music start. The device can even automatically detect if you are on a call or streaming to activate without manual intervention.
To go further in managing digital distractions, a dedicated mobile application (iOS/Android) accompanies the Busy Bar. It allows you to block notifications from smartphones and tablets during work periods. A "hardcore" mode is even provided to temporarily block access to the most time-consuming applications like Instagram or TikTok. Additionally, for fans of structured work methods, a Pomodoro timer is directly integrated.
$249 to say "leave me alone" (and entertain the geeks)
This fun accessory is primarily aimed at professionals working in shared spaces. It may also be of interest to those who want to optimize their work time, as well as developers and technology enthusiasts thanks to its open API. Geeks should therefore be able to benefit from extensive customization.
Offered via a Kickstarter campaign at a price of around $249, the Busy Bar isn't exactly cheap for a display. But it should also be seen as a productivity tool that combines smart display, intuitive control, automation, home automation, and digital distraction management. Not to mention that retro-modern look that may appeal to a certain audience.
