Last February, Marvel Studios released its film Captain America: Brave New World, with the arrival of Sam Wilson as Anthony Mackie, replacing Chris Evans in the lead role. Fans were also introduced to a new villain in the form of the Leader, but his look was radically different from the comics. However, the original makeup was closer to the comics as these photos show.
Captain America 4, a Marvel movie that divides fans
This is certainly not the Marvel movie that will mark the MCU. With a critical score of 49% on Rotten Tomatoes and a B- on CinemaScore, Captain America: Brave New World received a mixed reception from professional critics. However, the public showed more generous with a 79% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and praised Anthony Mackie's performance as Sam Wilson/Captain America.
Box office-wise, while the start was good, with its estimated production budget of $180 million, the film generated $414 million worldwide. To be profitable, Captain America 4 would have had to reach $425 million. Still, it's not the best Marvel production due, in part, to its storyline. But the House of Ideas could have kept its original ideas that could have appealed to fans more. First, by keeping this role that was originally supposed to be played by Giancarlo Esposito. And that's not all! Marvel should have kept the original look imagined by the makeup artists for the character of the Leader.
The original look of the Leader in Captain America 4 more faithful to the comics
His interpreter, Tim Blake Nelson, had already played Samuel Sterns aka the Leader in The Incredible Hulk. His appearance in Captain America 4 was mocked by fans, comparing him to a video game character from the 2000s. Some lament that his head simply isn't big enough and isn't as close to the character presented in the comics.
What's a shame is that Marvel had commissioned the makeup company Blue Whale Studios to create the actor's makeup but didn't retain the original design in the final cut. The company has just shared images of the Leader, showing the actor with pale green skin and a disproportionately large skull and forehead that are much more faithful to the comics.
In the Instagram post, the studio explains that it proposed this makeup after being inspired by the character's look from the comics. And it's a shame because Marvel didn't see fit to keep the suggestion. For the film's director, Julius Onah, this change of look came about during reshoots because he wanted to better match the film's realistic aesthetic.
