It's the kind of thing you don't see every day at Ubisoft or elsewhere. Far Cry 4, released in 2014, has just received an unexpected update on PC. And not just any update. This discreet patch modifies several elements of the game, particularly around nudity, and it is mandatory if you want to continue playing online. Suffice to say, it has caused a reaction.
A patch imposed to play online for Ubisoft
No choice here: if you launch Far Cry 4 today, the Ubisoft game forces you to install this update. At first glance, it might seem like a simple bug fix. But upon closer inspection, this patch goes much further.
For example, the main character Ajay Ghale no longer appears naked in a well-known sequence in the Shanath arena. He now wears a loincloth. Another change noted by players: a scene involving a topless woman has been modified. She now wears a bra, and her breasts have been reduced.
Visual and audio changes
But that's not all for Ubisoft. Some audio files have also been modified. Strangely, only the English dialogue seems to be affected for now. It's difficult to know exactly what has been retouched, but the most curious players are already digging into the game files to find out more. Note: Other characters like Yuma or Kalinag would not have been modified. Their original design clearly showed nothing "sensitive", which could explain their absence in this wave of changes.
Why these changes now at Ubisoft? This is THE question everyone is asking. Why retouch a ten-year-old game? Several theories are circulating. One of them suggests a link with Tencent, the Chinese shareholder who recently strengthened its presence at Ubisoft. These kinds of modifications could therefore aim to make certain content more "international", or to Avoid any controversy in certain sensitive markets.
