ChatGPT is strengthening its free offering with the arrival of in-depth search. This decision democratizes one of the most interesting features developed by OpenAI – which was previously reserved for paying subscribers. We'll explain what it brings.
Initially reserved for Pro subscribers, then extended to all paying subscribers, Advanced Search is also available to free users. This feature allows you to launch a particularly thorough search on any topic you submit to ChatGPT. The operation can take up to half an hour, a few hours, or even longer depending on the difficulty.
Once the AI has completed its mission, a notification lets you know it's time to check the result. In conjunction with the o3 model, Deep Search allows you to immediately obtain a list of sources and an initial perspective on specific topics. A task that could take a human researcher several days.
ChatGPT adds Deep Search to free users
It is still necessary to check everything the AI finds – errors remain common. However, the AI's output, which is particularly detailed, is one of the most useful new features for those who use ChatGPT on a daily basis. In the free version, users will have to accept some limitations. The mode will rely solely on the o4-mini model, which is faster, but also a little less "intelligent."
The AI's output will also be shorter, but, OpenAI assures, the quality of the search itself should be equivalent to what paid users can enjoy. In the free version, access to the resource-intensive Deep Search is limited by a reduced quota of monthly uses. It will therefore only be possible to use it 5 times per month.
It should also be noted that quotas also apply to free subscribers. ChaGPT Plus or Team subscribers are entitled to 25 monthly searches, including 10 complete in-depth searches and 15 lighter ones. Business subscribers are entitled to 250 in-depth searches, including 125 complete ones. The feature is currently being rolled out and should arrive for the last free users by the end of next week.
