While the geopolitical context is still very tense between the United States and Europe, particularly since Donald Trump announced a spectacular 20% increase in customs tariffs, analysts are redoubling their concerns.
Indeed, a study conducted by Asterès for Cigref, an association dedicated to digital technology, shows that the situation in Europe is very worrying. In this thirty-page report, the study shows the impressive costs of digital technology for the European continent, but above all a very strong dependence on the United States.
Two million jobs in the United States financed by Europe
While Europe is currently experiencing a very strong recession, the study entitled “Technological dependence on American software and cloud services: an estimate of the economic consequences in Europe”” could well provide a first explanation for this phenomenon...
According to the figures presented, these 264 billion euros annually alone represent a total of two million jobs that could be relocated to Europe.
Looking more closely at the figures in this study, it is cloud services in particular that represent a very significant share of this spending.
83% of the European cloud held by the United States
Given the lack of public information in France and Europe, and in order to obtain more concrete figures on the market share Represented by the United States in cloud-related services, the Asterès firm proceeded methodically.
In addition to conducting numerous interviews with IT managers from the largest French groups, the organization took a closer look at the GDP of European countries to gain insight into spending.
This calculation allowed the firm to identify European cloud spending for France, Europe, and especially the United States. While Europe represents 16% of European cloud spending, the United States represents 83% of this market.
Although this annual spending in the United States is currently estimated at 54 billion euros, it could well be revised downwards in the coming years.
Towards a first European cloud Coming by 2035?
With competitors like Google Cloud Platform, Amazon Web Services, and Microsoft Azure, analysts believe it is not viable to completely replace the American cloud with an entirely European cloud.
Nevertheless, a relocation of 15% of these services to the European continent by 2035 remains possible. Even if this remains very theoretical for the moment, according to Asterès estimates, this would allow Europe to create 500,000 jobs.
