What if the story of DOOM: The Dark Ages was one of the game's greatest assets? At least, that's what the latest trailer for the prequel, released last night, suggests. This new chapter in the modern era of the franchise – which will be released on May 15 on Game Pass, Xbox Series, PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, and Battle.net – intends to prove that pure action and an immersive universe can go hand in hand. The narrative shift undertaken by DOOM: Eternal in 2020 promises to be pushed to its climax with the origin story of the DOOM Slayer.
Despite his status as an iconic figure in video games, the protagonist of the license has never yet revealed his own story. And even if the mystery that until now surrounded this extraordinary marine helped to forge a strong identity for him, it was high time for players to learn more about him. The teams at id Software are therefore not doing things by halves and are offering their soldier an adventure worthy of the greatest blockbusters.
Last January, the studio claimed this opus as “our most ambitious game to date“. Our first hands-on with the game already seemed to confirm this statement, and now the latest trailer reinforces these impressions. With a perfect blend of fantasy and science fiction, truly menacing antagonists, Hollywood-style voice acting, and an ever-more catchy soundtrack, DOOM: The Dark Ages is well on its way to becoming the most memorable installment in the franchise.
