After the immense critical and commercial success of the animated films How to Train Your Dragon, Universal Pictures plans to release a live-action remake this year, and has just announced a release date for its sequel, How to Train Your Dragon 2. The future of Hiccup and Toothless is assured.
After the success of the animated films, live-action reboots
The How to Train Your Dragon trilogy is now the pride of Dreamworks Animation studios. The adventures of Harold and his dragon Toothless, which began in 2010, spanned nine years, three films, and a whopping $1.7 billion in worldwide box office revenue (not counting the success of spin-off products). Added to this is a huge critical success. You only have to take a look at the rating sites to see the impact of the license and its (deserved) place at the Oscars. While the franchise failed in Hollywood, the second installment, How to Train Your Dragon 2, won the Golden Globes for Best Animated Feature in 2015.
It's therefore not surprising that Universal Pictures has decided to capitalize on the license by bringing it to the live-action arena. A remake of the first opus led by Dean Debois (behind the three animated feature films) will be released in our cinemas this year. Trailers, posters and other visuals: Universal has hammered its communication to ensure that it brings spectators to the theaters on the big day.
Already How to Train Your Dragon 2 announced, even before the release of the first film
But the studio didn't wait for the film's potential success to reveal the development of a sequel and even a release date. Announced on June 11, 2027, How to Train Your Dragon 2 took advantage of of the enormous public enthusiasm for the anticipated screening of the first part - expected in theaters on June 13 - at CinemaCon 2025, which has just concluded.

Universal seems very confident about the future commercial success of its live-action reboots. A license that doesn't stop at the borders of cinema, since we recall that it will be at the forefront of Universal's next park, Epic Universe (which will open its doors on May 22, 2025 in Orlando, Florida), through animatronic dragons, a flat ride, and also a roller coaster.
