At the beginning of the year, everything pointed to a lasting decline for Tesla in Europe. However, the March figures show a return to the top. But this success hides a more fragile reality at on an annual scale.
Tesla sales had fallen sharply in Europe at the beginning of 2025. Between January and February, the brand had lost nearly half of its customers compared to last year. This decline was attributed to increasingly aggressive competition, a lack of new products, and the political controversies surrounding Elon Musk. But to everyone's surprise, the American manufacturer rebounded in March, making a spectacular comeback in the electric car sales rankings. The Model Y has established itself as the best-selling electric vehicle of the month with 10,150 units, closely followed by the Model 3 with 8,916 sales. These results place Tesla in second place among the best-selling brands in Europe in the electric segment. But this one-off success masks a more worrying trend. As of March 2024, the manufacturer had sold approximately 38,090 vehicles on the continent. In March 2025, only 21,864 were sold, a drop of 42.6% year-on-year.
Tesla shines in March, but its European sales collapse year-on-year
This decline affects several major markets. In France, Tesla shows a 37% decline, while in Sweden and the Netherlands, sales collapsed by 64% and 61% respectively. These figures show that, despite the company's dominance during the month, the brand is far from having regained its growth momentum. Targeted discounts and delayed deliveries may have artificially inflated March results, without reflecting a sustainable recovery.
Tesla, however, remains a benchmark in the electric market. The Model Y and Model 3 continue to attract customers thanks to their range, onboard technology, and charging network. But the brand is suffering from a loss of momentum, partly linked to the controversial image of its leader. If the American manufacturer wants to regain leadership in the long term, it will have to offer new, more accessible models and regain the trust of some drivers. For the moment, its European leadership remains more fragile than it seems.
